Meet Southern Prep’s Director of Plans and Training: Major Brett Wiersma

Major Brett A. Wiersma is the Military Departments Director of Plans and Training with the principal focus on the Southern Preparatory Academy’s activities and character development programs.

Prior to becoming the Director of Plans and Training on September 7, 2021, Major Wiersma served as a Magistrate with the City of Auburn, Alabama.

A native of Michigan, Major Wiersma enlisted in the military service in 1989. Over the course of eight years, Major Wiersma served in a variety of assignments with Reserve, National Guard, and Active Duty units as a Non Commissioned Officer. Upon graduation from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1998, Major Wiersma attended Officer Candidate School, where he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.

Over the course of his career, Major Wiersma served in multiple command and staff positions throughout the world to include serving with 2nd Battalion, 4th Field Artillery in support of the initial phases of Operation Iraqi Freedom; Commander of Charlie Battery, 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery (MLRS); Commander of the United Nations Command Honor Guard, Korea; Theater Fire Support Office for the United Nations Command, United States Forces Korea & Eight United States Army, Korea; Executive Officer to the Fires Center of Excellence (FCoE) and Fort Sill Commanding General; Commander of the Headquarters Detachment, FCoE; Commandant of the Fort Sill Resiliency Training Campus; Stability Team Brigade Operations Officer with 3rd IBCT, 1st Infantry Division, Afghanistan; Battalion Operations Officer with 3rd Battalion, 11th Regiment (OCS); Executive Officer of 199th Leadership Brigade, Fort Benning; and Liaison Officer at the Maneuver Center of Excellence for the Fort Sill Capabilities and Development Directorate.

Major Wiersma and his wife, Wendy, have been married for more than 23 years and have two children.
