New cadets are often confused when they hear us “Oldies” talking about “Mentor Lunch”, and our parents often ask us what we are talking about when we mention it at home. So, for those of you who want to know more or haven’t even heard of it, we decided to give you some insight into this program through an interview with the Southern Prep Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Charissa Reynolds.

What is the purpose of having Mentor Lunch?
“The purpose of the mentor lunch is to provide guidance and life preparation to our cadets as they face the trials and tribulations of the teenage years and young adulthood, so in the future, they will have a positive impact on their community.”

Have we seen any improvement in Cadets since the program started?
“Teachers, administrators, and I have seen that most cadets respond positively to the program. We often find that the cadets start seeing us not just as someone in a classroom or office, but as a person they can come to when they need advice or just need to talk.”

How are the groups assigned?
“The groups are assigned based on cadet input and the needs of individual cadets.”

Have we seen any improvements in Faculty and Administration who participate in the program?
“The faculty and administration enjoy being able to spend one-on-one time getting to know the cadets. They like the interaction that allows them to really see the personalities of the individual cadets.”

Have we seen any improvement in Cadet morale since the program has started?
“The faculty has seen an improvement in cadet morale since the program started and we even have cadets asking if it can become a weekly event!”
