When was Southern Prep founded?

In 1898, Dr. Lyman Ward, a Universalist minister from New York, founded the academy as a non-profit, non-denomination, co-educational institution for rural youth. In 2019, the name of the Academy changed from Lyman Ward Military Academy to Southern Preparatory Academy.

Is Southern Prep a boys only academy?


What does a military education look like?

Our academy is designed to provide your son with a focus on him as an individual, providing him with the right classes, support systems, and structure he needs to succeed, thrive, and ultimately graduate from our program with the tools he needs to face life head-on.

Does your school have a dual college credit program? If so, what college or university are you affiliated with?

Yes. We are partnered with Southern Union Community College, Central Alabama Community College and Sophia, a part of ACE CREDIT through Edgenuity.

What is the average cost for dual enrollment credits?

Southern Union and Central Alabama’s average cost is $350 for a three (3) credit course. Sophia’s average cost is $325 to $500 per course.

Does your school offer any Advanced Placement (AP) courses?

Yes, we do offer AP courses through Edgenuity. The cost per online course is $99 plus the cost of the textbook.

Is Southern Prep a feeder program into the military?

No. Upon graduation, 90% of our students go on to attend a two- or four-year college or join the workforce. Only 10% go on to enlist in the military. 

Is Southern Prep a reform school?

No! Though we are a military academy, we are not an institution for “bad” kids. We are still the same as any other college prep boarding school…but better! We provide students with the discipline and structure needed for focus, self-reliance, and success. Beyond our strong academic program, our military traditions teach students how to become distinguished citizens and confident leaders.

What type of additional academic support is offered apart from traditional classroom instruction?

We offer ACT/SAT prep courses, supervised evening study hall, one to one teacher tutoring and two (2) nights a week there are additional tutoring sessions offered by the Dean of Academics in the library in the evening.

What is the average class size (student-teacher ratio)?

Our average class size is 8:1.

How many of your instructors hold advanced degrees?

Out of our 12 instructors 7 of them hold advanced degrees.

What sports programs do you offer?

We offer football, basketball, cross country, soccer, baseball and track. Some extracurricular programs offered are Sword Drill, Drill Team, Color Guard and Rifle Team.

Are you affiliated with any state of regional athletic association?

We are in Region 6 of the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA).

Is your school affiliated with JROTC program?

Southern Prep is a fully accredited Army JROTC School.

What is the school’s policy specific to weekend and overnight passes?

Southern Prep has a liberal weekend pass policy. As long as a cadet is academically qualified (passing all courses with a grade of 70% or higher) and is not on any Punishment Order, he is eligible for a weekend pass.

What type of leadership and character development programs do you offer?

Leadership is taught each and every day at Southern Prep by qualified TAC Officers and other members of the SP community. A more formal Character Development Program is being developed and will be taught by the Commandant of Cadets and other members of the Military Department.

Is your school religiously affiliated?

We are a non-denominational school, where cadets of all faiths are welcome.

What is the cost of tuition?

Base tuition is $24,625.00; however, depending on the payment plan selected the tuition range is $24,625.00 through $35,000.00 per academic year.

What additional fees are not included in the tuition?

Fees not included are spending money, special medical care beyond facilities of the infirmary, driver’s education, flying lessons, athletic participation, or willful destruction of property.

Do you offer financial aid?

Financial aid is offered through in-house discounts, such as: Active/Retired Military; First Responders; Ministers; Single Parent; Siblings; and, Airline employees. Tuition loan programs, such as Sallie Mae, assist many families in making tuition payments more affordable by providing the funds upfront and spreading the payments over a longer period of time.

Do you offer a payment plan?

We offer four (4) payment options they are, as follows: Payment in Full; Semester Payments; and, 10 Monthly Payments with our semester and monthly payment options there are some upfront fees due on or before the day of check-in.
